Witch Hotel opens with melodic synth and ethereal strings evoking the beginning of a mystical journey. The light and airy Main Theme sets the tone for the opening sequence of said Imaginary Motion Pikture. One can almost conjure a vision of floating over beautiful shots of landscape, panning across the earth as the song rises. Shots such as the opening of the Shining or Mandy come to mind. The imaginary viewer feels almost like a voyueristic bird being carried by the cascade of playful bells that make way to a discordant, dreamy, cacophony. By the end of the track, we the viewers have arrived at our destination for the next 55 minutes and 12 seconds of run time.

For his debut album, Acquisitions takes a different approach to story telling through music. Witch Hotel functions as an OST but for a film that does not exist. The album cover highlights this stylistic choice with a symbolic accolade sticker denoting it an Imaginary Mental Motion Pikture Score. It is almost as if the artists’ intentions are for the listener to collaborate with the soundtrack and using their own imagination, create a film accompaniment in their head. The beauty of this open-ended concept is every listener becomes a singular viewer. While the tracks themselves do not change, the imagery paired is distinctive and singular to each individual. The music takes you on an auditory adventure and your mind fills in the rest.

Playful feelings expressed through ascending and descending synths are layered with textured drone, making way for the darker themes to come. The mood of the film shifts as ethereal blends with uncomfortable undertones. The sound and thematic progression of the album follows a narrative sequence. Tracks are grouped into the 5 elements of plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and, conclusion. Each element has tonality, emotion and pacing that serves to carry the audience through the story. From the diaphanous expository tracks to the sinister rising action of Killer on The Road to the haunting strings of Room 13 and Lobby, Acquisitions invokes potent feelings from the beyond. Or a place within that we have not yet explored. All 16 songs are skillfully weaved together to form the story that we each get to uniquely experience, ad infinitum (again and again, endlessly, to infinity, without limit).
